Safeguarding and E-Safety

St Michael's Primary School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. We are fully committed to ensuring that consistent effective safeguarding procedures are in place to support families, children and staff at school. All concerns are passed through the members of staff who are trained as "Designated Safeguarding Leaders" in school in compliance with the "sharing of information" guidance.

Cause for Concern

Staff are asked to report any cause for concern to the Designated Safeguarding Leads using the schools safeguarding procedures. All staff receive initial child protection training when they begin at St Michael's Primary School, this is followed by more intensive training which takes place on a yearly basis. Any concerns will be shared with parents as early as possible.

E-Safety

We support our pupils’ use of the internet and seek to underpin their knowledge of safe use and protection. We provide our pupils with an awareness of how to stay safe online both in the school environment and beyond. We believe that children should adhere to the certification given to games, DVDs etc. All of the games and DVDs used at school will be rated as U. Parental permission is sought for the use of any other material (such as appropriate clips from PG films in certain year groups)

Live Streaming

#Liveskills is a package of resources focusing on live streaming. Live streaming is increasingly becoming one of the most popular online activities for children and young people. Apps such as Musical.ly, Live.me, Periscope and YouNow are all soaring in popularity, which has seen other well established apps such as Facebook adding live streaming functions. Facebook/Social media sites

Children of primary school age are not entitled to use social media sites such as Facebook/Instagram/ Twitter/Snapchat. Children will not be using social media sites during school hours. We also ask parent/carers not to name school, staff or other children on any form of social media, or share photographs of any school events.

PREVENT Duty

All staff receive annual update training on the PREVENT DUTY which aims to eradicate radicalisation.

Attendance

All lateness and absences are recorded by the office staff. Reasons will be sought for all absence or lateness. Attendance is monitored through these systems and referrals to the Attendance Officer can be made. Parents will always be informed of concerns around attendance at the earliest point. If attendance concerns continue the school will refer to the Local Authority. There will be no authorised ‘Leave From School’, only in exceptional circumstances. If a parent wishes to request a Leave of Absence, please complete this form and return to the school office with a covering letter explaining the reason for the exceptional circumstance. If a holiday absence is unauthorised, a penalty notice may be served to parents.

We understand that from time to time children can become ill, please see the below guidance from the NHS with regards to common childhood illnesses and some restrictions for school attendance.

The links included on the website are to sites with useful further information for those looking to find out more about aspects of this area. The chatdanger website is run by Childnet International.

CyberSense

A new E-safety app designed to help parents talk about e-safety issues with their children to ensure that they make smart choices to stay safe online. Aimed at children aged between 8-10 it will help them think about what they would do if they were faced with different situations online; from cyberbullying to sharing content with someone they don't know.

Kids Smart

Kids Smart parents area is full of information to help keep your children safe when using new technologies like mobile phones and the internet.
