Hedgehogs Expectations 

In Hedgehogs we are expected to complete the following challenges each week:

Reading - Read with an adult 5 times at home during the week. School library books need to be returned to school every Monday to be changed during our weekly library session. Read Write Inc books will be issued on a Monday and need to be returned to school every Friday.

Maths - Practise weekly Mathletics challenges.

Spellings - Practise and complete a spelling test (Monday) based on the Year 1spelling list. 

PE - Our PE day is every Friday. Please ensure that children come to school wearing a PE kit every Friday. All earrings must be removed and hair must be tied up.

Our learning in the Spring term 

 

English 

We have been learning the story of 'Handa's surprise'. We have used this story to innovate our own journey story which focuses on nouns, verbs and using adjectives. 

We then moved on to writing a non- chronological report based on our learning of 'Amazing antelopes'. 

 

Maths 

In maths we have been learning about place value and addition and subtraction to 20. We have focused on addition and subtraction sums, exploring part, part whole models, the use of a numberline and bar models. We have learnt about grouping tens and ones, using both concrete and pictorial resources. In addition to this we have explored place value to 50 and counting in tens. 

 

Finally we have explored length and height, focusing on using objects to measure and exploring measuring in centimetres. 

 

Topic - Toys

 

History

In History we have enjoyed exploring toys from the past. We focused on comparing toys from past to present, looking at toy timelines and how toys have changed over time. This included the use of materials and production of toys. In addition to this we explored the history of Lego, researching the creator of Lego and how Lego has changed over the years. This focused on shape, size and production. To end our topic we enjoyed taking part in a Lego workshop.

 

Science

In science we have learnt about everyday materials. This has included learning about different types of materials, exploring what objects are made out of and how we sort them based on their properties. We also explored waterproof and absorbent materials and well as looking at transparent and opaque materials. Finally we enjoyed learning about recycling and how/what materials can be recycled. 

 

Geography 

In Geography we have been learning about human and physical features, exploring aerial maps of our local area and exploring where the creator of Lego was born. 

 

Art/DT

We have been learning how to create a collage backdrop for the puppets we will be making. 

 

 

Our learning in the Autumn term

 

English

We will be learning the story of ‘How to catch a star’. We will use this to innovate our own wishing story which focuses on sentence construction.

We will then be writing non-fiction instructions based on our learning of 'How to catch a fairy'.

 

Maths

We will be focusing on place value within ten, which explores counting on from a given number, counting backwards, recognising one more, more less, using a numberline and identifying greater than, less than and equals to. We will also be learning about addition and subtraction, exploring part whole models and number bonds. We will finish the term learning about both 2-D and 3-D shapes.

 

Topic Stories from around the world

In Science, we will be learning about animals including humans. We will be exploring a variety of common animals including fish, amphians, reptiles, birds and mammals. We will also explore animals that are carnivores, herbivores and omnivores. Finally we will identify and label basic parts of the human body and explore our senses. 

 

In Geography, we will be focusing on naming and locating the world's seven continents and five oceans using maps, atlases and globes.

In History, we will be learning about significant historical events such as Humpty Dumpty (Colchester wall) and Amelia Earheart

In Art, we will be exploring paint to create artwork based on the painting the 'Starry night'.
